Even after they are not fit for their main job of storing valuables during long distance transportation, shipping containers still have a lot of life left in them and recycling them to build environmentally friendly buildings is the most viable option. Working on the same lines a Detroit-based environmental consulting firm, Three Squared Inc, is building a new residential complex with 20 separate livable units by recycling 93 shipping containers.
The residential complex being built near Wayne State University will be four stories tall and will let potential buyers see how innovative shipping container architecture can be. Jetson Green reports that the residential complex, dubbed Rosa Parks Condo is designed by local architect Steven Flum, and each unit comes with ducted reverse cycle air and tankless water heating. According to USA Today, the shipping-container condo project was first proposed in 2008 but the project stalled in the national real estate crisis.
The $3.4 million project would see empty shipping containers being stacked four high, cut in windows and doors, install plumbing, stairways and heating along with other amenities such as balconies and landscaped patios. The living spaces would range in size from 850 to 1920sqf and according to initial estimates they should run about 5 percent less than similarly sized condos.
